I love everything about Christmas! As soon as Halloween is over I start planning my December celebrations.

It’s not just presents and food in my family though. We also love doing Christmas themed crafts and activities together. I find it’s the perfect time of year to spend more time as a family doing the things we love. So…. that means making Christmas Slime!

As you know we are completely obsessed with slime! We’ve made so many different types over the last few months. You can check them out here:

Christmas Slime

My daughter and I started brainstorming ideas for the perfect Christmas slime. We thought about doing red and green glitter slime or slime that looked like snow, but those seemed so… well… normal!

Candy Cane Slime | Perfect Christmas Kids Craft | Stripey Holiday Slime with the smell of Peppermint! One of the things I love most about Christmas is candy canes! I love anything peppermint favored! Just the smell of candy canes puts me in a good mood.

My daughter suggested that we make stripey candy cane slime! Perfect!

We had so much fun making and playing with the Butter Slime, that we wanted to use the same technique for this project. The Butter Slime is so smooth and stretchy, it really is the most fun smile to play with (and the least messy!).

Candy Cane Slime

We decided to make 2 batches of butter slime – one white and one red. To this we added peppermint extract, so your Candy Cane Slime has that delicious Christmas smell!

The key ingredient in butter slime is the Magic Model Clay. It’s important that you use this exact type of clay, otherwise it won’t work.

It’s the clay that makes the slime smooth and stretchy. It also gets ride of the sticky texture that some children don’t like.

Supplies

To make Candy Cane Slime you will need your regular slime making supplies, plus the Magic Model Clay.

A few notes on the supplies:

Glue

I bought a one gallon bottle of Elmer’s glue at the beginning of the summer. It’s now November and we’ve still got some left. This was definitely the best investment I’ve made! I had no idea my kids would love making slime so much. If I had been buying the smaller bottles I would have spent a fortune by now! The gallon bottle is DEFINITELY the way to go!

I also like to get my glue from Amazon. Slime is SOOOOO popular right now, I’ve found a lot of store are sold out of basic slime making supplies. It’s so annoying to drive across town to buy the supplies and find they have sold out!

A gallon of glue is also about HALF the price on Amazon compared to our local craft stores! Win-win!

Slime Activator

I have always used Borax as a slime activator. I’ve been making slime with my children, nieces, nephews and school groups for over 10 years. I’ve never had any problems with it. But I understand some people are nervous about using it (I explain more about my choice of Borax in my Glitter Slime post). If you choose not to use Borax, you can use contact lens solution instead.

When I use Borax I mix 1/2 teaspoon of Borax in 1/2 cup of warm water and mix until it is completely dissolved. I will not use all of this solution – in most cases I use 3-4 tablespoons at the most.

Model Magic Clay

Make sure you buy the Crayola Model Magic Clay and not the Air Dry Clay. They are very different and it will not work with regular air dry clay (trust me!).

Model Magic Clay comes in many different colors. I decided to use red and white clay so my slime would be candy cane colored.

Steps

You are going to make TWO BATCHES of slime – one white and one red.

You will need a large bowl, a spoon and a smaller bowl to mix your Borax in (if using). As well as measuring cups to measure out the ingredients.

Step 1: Make Slime Activator

Follow this step if you are using Borax solution as your slime activator. If you decide to use contact lens solution, then you can skip this step.

In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 teaspoon of Borax and 1/2 cup of warm water.

Stir until it is completely dissolved. Set aside to cool.

Step 2: Make Slime Base

FOR EACH BATCH: Mix together 1/2 cup of Elmer’s Glue, 1/3 Cup of Shaving Foam, and 1/4 Cup of water.

You can also add Peppermint Extract or Essential Oil at this stage if you would like your slime to have a peppermint smell!

Make sure you combine these ingredients very well.

If you get lumpy slime, most of the time it is because your didn’t mix together your base ingredients properly before adding the slime activator.

Step 3: Mix Together

Slowly add small amounts of your slime activator.

I normally add about 1 teaspoon at a time, mix well and then add a little more. Depending on the ingredients you have used it will take about 2-4 tablespoons of Borax solution to make slime – but this does vary, so take your time and add it slowly.

Make sure you mix well between adding each small amount of activator. It takes a short time for it to work, so you want to make sure it has fully reacted before adding more.

You want you slime to be a firm, but still slightly wet and sticky consistency. You don’t want it too firm or it will not combine properly with the clay.

Step 4: Kneed in the Clay

Once you have made your slime it is time to add the Model Magic Clay – red clay for this batch.

If the red color isn’t as intense as you would like then you can add a few drops of red food coloring.

This is the fun part! Fold together the slime and clay and kneed them until they are completely combined. This does take a few minutes, but kids LOVE to help with this step!

Step 5: Repeat for the Second Batch

Repeat the above steps for your second batch of clay. This time use the white Magic Model Clay.

Step 6: Twist Together

You now have 2 lumps of slime – one white and one red. This is the really fun part!

Take a small piece of each slime and stretch it out. Twist the two colors together to make a red and white striped cane. There you have it, Candy Cane Slime!

As you play with it the slime will mix together; you get a cool tie-dye look as you mix them.

The butter slime takes longer to mix together than regular slime so you should have time to enjoy the stripes.

Eventually the two colors of the Candy Cane Slime will mix together and then you will have a cute pink butter slime! It’s a nice project to teach younger children about mixing colors together.
