How to Make a Cute Lollipop Love Bug!

Ready for a quick and easy Valentine’s Day craft that your kids will love? Read on!

Can you smell that? It’s ‘love’ in the air!!

OK, you can’t really smell love, but I swear at this time of year everything seems to be about love and showing your affection to the special people in our lives.

My daughter was panicking the other day because she didn’t know what to give her friends for Valentine’s Day. She doesn’t want to give them the generic store-bought cards. (One year she gave her friends homemade heart squishies!)

So we put on our thinking caps and came up with this ADORABLE Lollipop Love Bug!

Easy Valentine’s Day Craft

It is such an easy Valentine’s Day craft and cheap too! My daughter seems to have a million friends and it can get pretty expensive when she wants to make something for them all… not to mention the amount of time it takes!

So I’m doubly pleased with this simple lollipop craft, it saves me time and money! Win-win!

This is also a GREAT Valentine’s Day craft for classroom parties or youth groups. It’s so simple and needs minimal supervision for older kids.

The term love bug has many meanings. As a Floridian, it means the swam of little flying bugs that we have to endure twice a year! But really it should be used to describe a couple who are in love or a cute bug that is symbolically used to decorate Valentine’s related items or crafts.

And since we have to be sweet to our loved ones, why not incorporate the concept of a love bug into a lollipop?!

So there you go! A cute Lollipop Love Bug craft for Valentine’s Day (or any other time of year, come to think of it!).

The Materials

As I mentioned this is a pretty simple and cheap Valentine’s Day craft, so the materials are pretty basic. You probably have most of them around the house already!

Valentine's Day Craft - Lollipop Love Bug

We used plain red and pink card, but you could use pattern card too. in fact, I think it would look really cute with heart patterned pink paper!

I tend to use hot glue for projects like this and my daughter is older (12 years old), so she’s capable of using a hot glue gun without hurting herself. But if your kids are younger, then I would suggest using Elmers glue or something similar.

Valentine’s Day Lollipop Love Bug Instructions

Once you’ve gathered all your supplies the steps to make this Lollipop Love Bug are very simple. Let’s get started!

Step 1: Gluing the Eyes

The first step is to glue the googly eyes onto the lollipop. This is going to make the head of our love bug.

Step 2: Cutting Out The Red Hearts

While you wait for the glue on the googly eyes to dry, you can cut out two red hearts. You want these to each be about twice the size of the lollipop head.

If you are doing this craft with smaller children, you might want to cut the hearts out ahead of time.

Step 3: Cutting Out the Pink Hearts

Next, you want to cut out two pink hearts. These need to be slightly smaller than the red hearts.

We traced the shape of the red hearts onto the pink paper and then cut slightly inside that line.

Step 4: Glue the Red & Pink Hearts

Once you have your 2 red hearts and 2 pink hearts cut out, you want to glue them on top of each other.

Glue the pink heart on top of the red heart. We used hot glue, but a glue stick would work perfectly for this step!

Step 5: Gluing the Hearts Together

Once the glue has dried from the previous step you want to glue the two sets of hearts together.

You will glue the lower tips of the hearts together so they look like bug or butterfly wings.

Step 6: Attaching the Wings

Now, this is the step where your Lollipop Love Bug will start to take shape!

You are going to glue the wings onto the ‘back’ of the lollipop. Basically you are sticking the wings on the side of the lollipop with the face pointing forwards.

Step 7: Making the Antenna

Your Love Bug isn’t complete without a set of antenna, so that’s what we’ve going to make next!

Cut the pipe cleaner to the length that you want (we cut ours in half) and then bend it into two equal parts to make a ‘V’ shape.

Now you can get creative and curl the pipe cleaner, make it into a spiral or a zig-zag… whatever takes your fancy!

Step 8: Attaching the Antenna

Next, you simply glue the antenna to the top of the lollipop, just behind the eyes.

And you are DONE!

Once you get into a flow, each love bug shouldn’t take longer than a couple of minutes to make!

So what are you waiting for? Go spread some love with this adorable Valentine’s Day craft!
